"It's great having your own home. It's total freedom."
Due to his paranoia, Jeff was homeless for 4 years. He would stay in a shelter or find a secluded spot to sleep, preferably a car. During the day Jeff would look for odd jobs to earn some extra cash. After participating in the A Place To Start (APTS), Jeff is now housed permanently in his own apartment.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer at Virginia Supportive Housing to help provide permanent stable homes for your community's homeless population

Our Volunteer Program offers individuals and groups a variety of challenging and rewarding opportunities to serve the Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH) Community. VSH's tenants and clients value and benefit from interacting with volunteers. This interaction contributes to their confidence and stability.

Listed below are some of VSH's volunteer opportunities.

Administrative and Agency Support

VSH staff welcomes the assistance of helpful volunteers at the agency headquarters. The areas where help is most appreciated and beneficial to the agency generally include organizational and program support. Many new opportunities become available all the time, so inquire about additional possibilities or offer your talents when you talk with us.

Client-Centered

Participate, explore, teach, lead, celebrate life and make a difference. These are all the things volunteers who work with our VSH clients can experience. Many of our clients have experienced homelessness, struggled financially, and encountered many hardships. Some have incurred traumatic brain injuries, chronic health issues, physical or mental disabilities. They need and want contact and relationships with the people in their communities! The skill-building and social interaction that occurs through client-centered volunteering contributes to our program participants' confidence and helps keep them stabilized in permanent housing.

Property Maintenance and Beautification

Volunteers who wish to assist VSH Property Management staff have a variety of options! Outdoors lovers can work to beautify the residential grounds by planting flowerbeds, trimming hedges, cutting grass, raking leaves, gardening, etc. Those with a flair for interior design and painting can help by sprucing up the residents' common areas and living spaces. Since VSH owns well over a dozen properties statewide, there are many possible projects available (seasonally as needed).

Marketing and PR

We believe strongly in our mission of providing permanent housing and comprehensive support services to very low-income individuals and families who are homeless and/or who have disabilities in order to initiate and promote their journey from homelessness to productivity and independence. If you feel the same way we do, we would love your involvement with our agency! The exact project will be determined by the interests and skills of the volunteer(s), and the need and resources present.

To volunteer your time and talents or to learn more about our volunteer opportunities, please fill in the form and our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you. Thank you.
